Coal Pollution Doubles Mortality Risk, Worse Than Previously Thought
Fine particulate air pollutants from coal-fired power plants (known as coal PM2.5) may be more dangerous to human health than previously thought, raising mortality risk by more than double the rate of other sources of PM2.5, some new research has found.
“PM2.5 from coal has been treated as if it’s just another air pollutant,” said Lucas Henneman, lead study author. “But it’s much more harmful than we thought, and its mortality burden has been seriously underestimated.”
The study examined emissions data from 480 coal power plants for the years 1999-2020 and Medicare health data for the years 1999-2016. Researchers determined that 460,000 deaths were attributable to coal PM2.5 during the time period studied, which accounted for 25% of all PM2.5-related deaths.
These statistics indicate that coal PM2.5 raises all-cause mortality risk 2.1 times more than other sources of PM2.5. However, there was some good news: Although coal has not been eliminated as a power source, deaths from coal PM2.5 dropped 95% in 2020 as compared to 1999.
Cocoa Extract May Boost Brain Function, Improves Diet Quality
A cocoa extract supplement containing cocoa flavanols – a type of antioxidant – may improve cognitive function in older adults, a new study has revealed. The benefits were found to be mostly significant for adults with a poor quality diet, suggesting that the supplement worked by improving nutrient intake.
The study was a long-term clinical trial named Cocoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study (COSMOS). It involved over 21,000 older women and men who were assigned to take either a supplement containing 500 mg of cocoa flavanols or a multivitamin daily for 2 years.
Cognitive function was tracked through neuropsychological assessments during the study period. Interestingly, the cocoa supplement was found to improve brain function for a subgroup of the study who had a poor quality diet at baseline, although it did not outperform the multivitamin overall.
These results suggest that cocoa extract may benefit brain health in those who aren’t consuming enough antioxidants – particularly flavanols – in their diet. This corresponds with previous research showing that flavanols may have protective properties against age-related memory decline. How Mindfulness & Dance Can Boost Your Mental Health
The somatosensory cortex arcs almost like a headband across the top of the brain. Though once thought to only be involved in processing sensory data, it’s now known to play a role in various stages of emotion processing with changes to the cortex seen in people with mental health disorders like anxiety and depression. Activities that tap into sensory awareness – such as meditation, dance, and body scans – may help activate the somatosensory cortex, potentially improving mental health in the process. (More)
Prenatal PFAS Exposure May Raise Obesity Risk
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a notorious group of chemicals often present in non-stick and water-resistant products. They are already linked to a number of negative health effects, and some new research has now found that prenatal exposure to PFAS may increase the risk of obesity during late adolescence (16-20 years of age). Overall, higher levels of certain PFAS in the mother’s blood raised obesity risk for the child by 13% to 59%. (More)
Going Plant-Based Can Improve Heart Health, Weight Loss
Eating less meat and more plant foods has long been thought to benefit heart health, but it has been difficult to prove this conclusively due to numerous lifestyle and genetic factors that may have influenced the results. However, a new study conducted with identical twins was able to control for genetics and found that a vegan diet lowered cholesterol and fasting insulin and promoted weight loss much better than a healthy omnivore diet over a period of only 2 months. Exercise Can Improve Pain, Fatigue in Breast Cancer Patients
Metastatic breast cancer – breast cancer that has spread to other areas of the body – usually involves symptoms and treatments that drastically decrease quality of life. A new study examined the effects of a regular exercise program (aerobic, resistance, and balance training) on metastatic breast cancer patients and found that it reduced pain, fatigue, and other symptoms. These results are encouraging, since some people with metastatic breast cancer worry that exercise may worsen their symptoms. (More)
7 Top Herbs & Supplements to Reduce Stress (+ 1 to AVOID)
While no one supplement will entirely get rid of your stress, some have proven to be helpful allies during stressful times. For example, ashwagandha can improve sleep and reduce feelings of stress, while both lemon balm and rhodiola may help lower anxiety. L-theanine – an amino acid found in green tea – also has a relaxing effect, and valerian can be used as a sleep aid and to combat anxiety. Getting enough magnesium is key to managing stress levels, but kava is a supplement that may be better avoided. (More)

While research has revealed much about the functions of human organs, the appendix remains very much a mystery. Some experts still believe it has no major role to play, but newer theories suggest it could be involved in immune function and possibly acts as a “storehouse” for good bacteria.
